Preparing For Your Child's First Haircut

Preparing For Your Child's First Haircut

Preparing for Your Child’s First Session at Trimmy’s.

A little preparation before your child’s first visit can make the haircut experience feel more familiar and predictable. Our goal is not to force a haircut, but to help your child build comfort and trust at their own pace.

1. Show Them the Space

Before your appointment, watch our Trimmy’s Hairapy space tour together. Seeing the environment beforehand can make arriving somewhere new feel more familiar. You can watch it several times leading up to the appointment if helpful.

2. Watch Haircut Sessions Together

Show your child a few Trimmy’s session videos so they can see what the haircut process looks and sounds like. Choose videos that feel relatable to your child and let them watch at their own pace.

3. Talk About the Haircut

Use simple, positive language to explain what will happen.

“First, we’re going to Trimmy’s.”

“Then we’ll meet your stylist.”

“We can take breaks when you need them.”

"And you get to play"

Keeping things simple and predictable can help your child know what to expect.

4. Practice at Home

If appropriate, gently introduce some of the sensations your child may experience, such as brushing or combing their hair, touching around the ears and neck, hearing clippers or buzzing sounds, or wearing a cape or towel. Try to associate these tasks with activites they love e.g eating their favorite snack, watching favorite show, doing puzzles etc

The goal is familiarity, not forcing tolerance.

5. Bring Their Comfort Items

Feel free to bring anything that helps your child feel comfortable, including a favorite toy, tablet, headphones, snack, fidget, sensory tool, or communication device. Don't forget to bring a change of clothes.

6. Sitting in the Chair Is Not Required

Your child does not have to sit still or remain in the haircut chair. They can explore, move around, take breaks, stay close to you, or receive their haircut in whatever way feels most comfortable.

We meet your child where they are.

7. Keep Expectations Flexible

A successful first session does not always mean completing a full haircut. Exploring the space, connecting with the stylist, allowing their hair to be brushed, or tolerating the clippers for a few seconds can all be meaningful progress.

Before You Arrive

Consider watching our space tour and session videos, practicing grooming sensations at home, packing comfort items, and sharing any important updates with your stylist.

Most importantly, remember that the first session does not have to be perfect. It is the beginning of helping your child build a more positive and comfortable relationship with haircuts.

We can't wait to meet you!
